Nyligen startade IBBY Sverige, i samarbete med Svensk biblioteksförening, Svenska Barnboksakademin, BULT och Svenska Tecknare, en insamling till stöd för biblioteksverksamheten i Palestina. De insamlade medlen går till IBBY Palestina och Tamer-institutet som driver utbildnings- och läsfrämjandeprojekt på Västbanken och i Gaza. Tidigare fanns två bibliotek i Gaza som IBBY varit med att bygga upp. Dessa bibliotek är nu förstörda och personalen har fram till nyligen befunnit sig på flykt. Kanske finns det nu möjlighet att börja bygga upp biblioteken igen. Tamer-institutet delar med sig texter och bilder av barn och ungdomar i Palestina som vi publicerat i IBBY-nytt och nu även här.

No Warmth in the Tent

The tent could be sweet—if only it were warm at night. Every night, I rub my gloves together, blow on them, then hide my whole body under the blanket trying to get warm, but it never works. I only keep my eyes exposed to watch the tent holes where raindrops fall on the mat.
Does anyone feel warm in the tents?

So Sad, Our Country!

In our camp, a child comes every afternoon calling out in the streets:
“So sad, our country!” It’s his sales pitch for iced drinks he keeps in a red box wrapped in a white towel. Children buy from him.
What’s surprising is that other children echo his cry throughout the day. Sadness has become the name of everything.

Magnetic Feet

In the car, I’m lost in thought—about something, or maybe nothing—because I’ve been in a bad mood for a while.
I wasn’t excited. The chaos was routine: cars pulling carts, grey rubble on the street, vendors shouting “drinks, chocolate pastries, bread, and helba!”
My father interrupted my thoughts and asked: ”Did you see the two barefoot children playing with big magnets, running between cars?”
I said, “No,” and stuck my head out the window to catch what was left of the scene. I told him:
“Oh, I saw them. Do magnets break car wheels?”
He replied:
“No. It’s more than that. They tie the magnets to ropes and drag them through the sand to collect lost coins!”
What has driven children to resort to such ways to earn money, at the cost of their childhood?
